Midlands MEP to lead debate in European Parliment on BnM job losses due to decarbonisation

Midlands North-West MEP, Ciaran Mullooly will lead a debate in the European Parliment on BnM (formerly Bord na Mona) job losses due to decarbonisation this evening (Tuesday).

The Independent Ireland politician will be speaking live from the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday (September 9) to discuss measures that will help workers who lost their jobs to benefit more from EU Just Transition funding.

"Hundreds of workers in BnM all over the Midlands and throughout Europe who lost their jobs after the closure of power stations due to decarbonisation," Mullooly said.

"Apart from a basic redundancy, [the workers] were effectively forgotten, and that's where the EU Just Transition fund was to come in. Many people would say it has failed them.

"That's why I brought forward a new policy document in the European Parliament which will be debated this week, and will outline measures to ensure that workers who lost their jobs, and their families, get support from the just transition fund."
