Irish driver Alex Dunne parts ways with McLaren Racing

Offaly's Alex Dunne (19) has, following a mutual agreement, parted ways with the McLaren Driver Development programme.

In a statement on his Facebook page on Thursday morning, Dunne, one of the brightest stars in world motor racing - said: "From today I’ve mutually decided to part ways with the McLaren Driver Development programme.

"I’d like to thank every individual at McLaren that has helped me develop and improve as a driver. To have my first opportunity to drive an F1 car, followed by two FP1 sessions, is something I’ll always hold very close to my heart.

"I wish them all the best for the future. Thank you, Papaya family. Still two important rounds (in the FIA F2 series) left to focus on this year, very excited for what’s to come."

In a separate statement, McLaren said: “McLaren Racing has ended its contract with McLaren Driver Development Programme member Alex Dunne. It has been a pleasure to work with Alex over the last year and to contribute to his growth as a driver.

"We wish Alex all the best for his career going forward."

It appears no reason was given for this surprise exit, but much is expected of the current Motorsport Ireland International Driver of the Year award winner, who is hotly tipped to make the breakthrough to Formula 1.

Eddie Irvine (2002) is the last Irish-born driver to compete in a Formula 1 race, while Ralph Firman competed in 2003 under an Irish licence.

This year, Dunne became the first Irish driver to participate in an F1 weekend since Firman, when he drove for McLaren in first practice at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Rumours are already circulating linking Dunne to another high-profile F1 team.
