Athlone Musical Society conjures up The Witches of Eastwick
The Athlone Musical Society are summoning up performers for auditions for their 2026 production of the Witches of Eastwick musical!
The Witches of Eastwick is a musical adaptation of John Updike’s 1984 novel of the same name. With a book and lyrics by John Dempsey and music by Dana P. Rowe, the show blends dark comedy, supernatural elements, and powerful themes of female empowerment and desire. It premiered in London’s West End in 2000. Most will be familiar with the film adaptation with its star studded cast including Jack Nicholson and Cher!
Set in the fictional New England town of Eastwick, the story follows three women; Alexandra (Alex), Sukie, and Jane. The trio are stuck in a monotonous, repressive small-town life. Each is frustrated and yearning for something more. More excitement, more passion and more meaning.
In a moment of shared longing, they unknowingly conjure Darryl Van Horne, a mysterious, charismatic, and devilish stranger. Darryl begins seducing each of the women, awakening their hidden powers and desires. Under his influence, they discover their inner strength. However, they soon realise that their dream-come-true comes at a cost.
The musical blends comedy, satire, and pathos, ultimately telling a story about reclaiming agency, the cost of unchecked desire, and the power of female solidarity.
Athlone Musical Society’s registration has officially closed for auditions to take place on Sunday October 5. Keep an eye on our socials for announcements, rehearsal teasers and ticket details.
