Man facing threat to kill charge ordered to stay out of Athlone

A man charged with assaulting a woman, producing a kitchen knife and threatening to kill her has been ordered to stay out of Athlone.

Bernard Cawley (47), with an address in Cluain Fia, Clara, Co Offaly, appeared before Judge Bernadette Owens at Athlone District Court on Wednesday, October 1, where an application was made to amend a bail condition that he stay out of Athlone.

He stands accused of assaulting a woman, producing a black-handled kitchen knife during the course of the assault, and threatening to kill her, all on November 5 of last year at Old Coosan Road.

Solicitor John Keogh, for the defence, suggested the condition be limited to Coosan, as the accused’s children are in Athlone.

However, Judge Owens noted that the charges were “very serious” and so “I don't think those conditions are unreasonable”.

She ordered Mr Cawley to stay out of Athlone, save for court appearances and solicitor meetings - for which he must provide proof of attendance.

Mr Cawley’s case is awaiting consent from the DPP for summary disposal. Judge Owens remanded him on continuing bail to November 5.
