Monksland traffic delays raised at council meeting

Traffic delays, which have occurred in Monksland around the development of a housing estate, and in particular around a new signalised junction there, brought discussion at the November area meeting of Roscommon Council.

The new signalised junction is at the Old Tuam Road and as the work also involves the installation of new shared surface footpath, new signalised traffic lights at the new access road to serve the granted residential development and traffic signs, road markings, kerbs, street lighting and high friction surfacing.

The location is west of Corran Riada and before Monksfield.

Cathaoirleach Clllr Domnick Connolly complained about traffic delays there and said that he had been contacted, via emails about the situation.

“There was a delay in traffic there with Stop/Go sign, which is disrupting people on the way to work,” said Cllr Connolly.

However, Susan Loughnane, meeting administrator said that the issue was specific to one morning and one evening, and has been addressed.

“I think what you’re referring to was a specific issue one evening and one morning and that was addressed with contractors,” said the administrator.

The meeting also heard that a traffic management plan had been agreed with the contractors, and the issue didn’t occur again.

The traffic delay discussion stemmed from a query by Cllr. John Keogh under Any Other Busine4ss at the end of the meeting where he asked if there was any update about the works on the housing development, if there was a timeframe, and how many units would be social housing.

“I can’t answer about the development itself, but water and wastewater connection has been put in and lights are ready to go depending on the electricity connection,” said Susan Loughnane, Meeting Administrator.

She also said that resurfacing works are scheduled to take place this week.
