Man charged with bringing chainsaw into Athlone pub
A man in his mid-40s is due to appear in court this afternoon (Monday) after he allegedly brought a chainsaw into a pub in the centre of Athlone yesterday evening.
A number of Gardai were called to the licensed premises on Church Street at approximately 5.15pm on Sunday.
The man was arrested at the scene and detained overnight at Athlone Garda Station, before being charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely a chainsaw.
He is due to appear in the district court this afternoon in relation to the charge.
A local Garda spokesperson said there were no injuries as a result of the incident.
Gardai were able to attend the scene promptly as they had been on duty nearby for the turning on of the Athlone Christmas Tree lights, which was taking place in the Civic Centre at around the same time.
