Dangerous trip hazards along promenade in Athlone

A series of dangerous trip hazards along promenade in Athlone have been brought to the attention of the council at a recent meeting.

The issue was raised by Cllr Aengus O'Rourke at the most recent meeting of the Athlone Moate Municipal District.

He highlighted "a number of very dangerous trip hazards on the riverside pathway along the promenade", asking that they are repaired as soon as possible.

"When will we see a plan for the rejuvenation of the promenade from the new bridge to the White Bridge," he asked.

The council executive responded that trip hazards will be investigated and addressed "at the earliest opportunity", adding that footpath upgrade could be considered for this year’s programme depending on priorities and the funding available.

The executive continued that enhancements along the promenade would be coordinated in conjunction with the Active Travel Team who are designing an active travel link along Elliot Road, and also in conjunction with Roscommon County Council who have included the promenade as part of the study area/options selection for a greenway link “The Lough Ree Greenway” from Roscommon to Athlone.
