Man hospitalised after daytime stabbing in Athlone

A man in his early 30s has been hospitalised after being stabbed in a daytime attack in the Battery Heights area of Athlone yesterday (Tuesday).

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened at approximately 3.30pm in a green area off Battery Road.

The injured party was taken to Portiuncula hospital in Ballinasloe, and has since been transferred to Galway University Hospital, for the treatment of injuries understood to be non-life threatening.

This morning, representatives of the Garda Water Unit in Athlone are carrying out searches locally in an effort to locate the knife used in the attack.

Gardai in Athlone are asking anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the wider Battery Heights area between 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday to contact them.
