Clarity sought on transfer of sites to two Athlone sports clubs

The transfer of sites beside the Athlone Regional Sports Centre to two prominent sports clubs in the town will be subject to a number of measures including the securing of plannning permission and confirmation of funding for the development of facilities.

In response to a question on the issue tabled before the March meetiing of Athlone Moate Municipal District, Cllr Frankie Keena was told that Westmeath County Council is supportive of plans by Athlone Basketball Club and Athlone Cricket Club to develop sports facilities close to the regional sports centre, and have been liaising with them “for a number of years.”

However, the written response provided to Cllr Keena stated that any proposals regarding the transfer of site would be subject to “feasability studies, planning permission and confirmation of funding for such developments.”

The Fianna Fail councillor has sought an update from the council on the transfer of sites at the sports campus beside the Athlone Regional Sports Centre to both the Athlone Basketball Club and also the local Cricket Club.
