Man threw dog out of second-floor apartment window

Probation and psychiatric reports are to be prepared for the next court appearance of a man who threw his own dog out the second-floor window of his Athlone apartment in January of last year.

Diarmuid Mahoney (49), with an address at Slí Nua, Sean Costello Street, Athlone, appeared before a sitting of Athlone District Court, having previously pleaded guilty to three criminal damage charges and one charge under the Animal Health and Welfare Act.

The court previously heard details of how, on January 25 of last year, at his own address, he caused unnecessary suffering to an animal by throwing his dog out the window moments after it bit him.

Gardaí were initially called to the scene shortly after 4pm following reports that the dog had been thrown from a window, which the accused had first broken with a pole. The dog survived and was treated for cuts on its legs.

The court also heard details of the three criminal damage charges, to which Mr Mahoney also pleaded guilty.

On June 30, 2024, at Sean Costello Street, Irishtown, Athlone, he scraped the driver’s side door of a car with a key, causing damage to the value of €500.

Two more charges before the court involved a combined €1,100 worth of criminal damage to the windows of Peddler Mac’s on Church Street, Athlone, on January 25, 2025, and Supermac’s, Irishtown, on January 24, 2025.Mr Mahoney’s solicitor, Tony McLynn, told the court that his client is continuing to attend psychiatric services.

Judge Bernadette Owens remanded him on continuing bail to July 22, when probation and psychiatric reports are expected to be ready.
