Athlone fire station in line for €3 million upgrade

Funding of €3 million towards a major upgrade and refurbishment of Athlone Fire Station was announced by the Government yesterday (Tuesday).

In addition to the announced funding for the Athlone station, a sum of €3 million has been announced for a Ballymahon Fire Station new-build development.

Local OPW Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran warmly welcomed the announcement stating that investment in both stations will allow firefighters "have the modern facilities and equipment they need to serve the public effectively".

“This announcement under the Fire Services Capital Programme (2026–2030) is a very significant investment for our local communities in Athlone and Ballymahon," said 'Boxer'.

"This investment will greatly enhance public safety across both communities, ensuring that our fire services are well-equipped to respond to emergencies, protect homes and businesses, and support critical infrastructure in the region.

"Our fire services are a vital part of the community, often the last line of defence, and it is essential that they are properly resourced.

"This funding will help future-proof the service locally, ensuring crews in Athlone and Ballymahon can continue to respond to increasingly complex incidents, particularly as our population grows and risks evolve," the Athlone Minister of State added.
