Young Athlone gymnast wins silver medal at London Spring Cup

A young Athlone gymnast has taken home a medal from the London Spring Cup 2026.

Eight-year-old Yeva Olefirenko took home the silver medal for hoop and a special artistry award.

She is one of three young gymnasts from Wings Rhythmic Gymnastics Club, based in Athlone, to bring home a medal from the London Spring Cup 2026. The other medal winners were Anna Thyhu from Mullingar (10) and Eire Phelan (9) from Clara. They were competing against 93 athletes from Finland, Lithuania, Great Britain among other countries.

These athletes train ten hours weekly at Wings, the only rhythmic gymnastics club in the Midlands, preparing for international competitions.

Their coach, Enya Tierney, said: "The girls were really punching above their weight going against very well established clubs from all over Europe, and they didn't only do great in the field of play but also outside it.

"They were focused and really respectful of other competitors. Hopefully this inspires other young girls to be confident in sports and aim big."
