100-year-old Athlone woman attributes long life to prayer, positivity and porridge

The family of Athlone native Peggy Stenson (née Kenny) recently celebrated her reaching the remarkable age of 100, with friends and family gathering at her home in Maple Court, Clonbrusk, for a garden party.
Originally from Magazine Road, Peggy was one of ten children born to Bridget and Tom Kenny, growing up in what was then known as Percy Cottages.
She spent many years working as an administrator with CIE in Athlone and was married to Eamonn Stenson, who passed away in 2013.
A familiar and much-loved figure, Peggy was well known in local bridge clubs, had a passion for pitch and putt, and was deeply devoted to her faith and the Franciscans.
Peggy attributes her exceptional health and longevity to three key ingredients: prayer, positivity, and porridge.
"I've always being very grateful for the many blessings God has bestowed upon me. I put God first always. I've never miss the daily TV Mass which I find it very uplifting and peaceful."
She noted that she always aims to see the good in the world, and in people.
"With so much negativity in the world nowadays it is easy to get bogged down and depressed with all the bad news out there. I'm a firm believer that there is always a lot more good out there than bad, it's just that the good news doesn't get reported as much as the bad news. Like everyone
“I've had my share of ups and downs, but overall I'm so grateful and lucky that the ups have far outweighed the downs and for that I'm eternally grateful."
The centenarian said her long life has been supported by a healthy breakfast in the form of a bowl of porridge every morning.
"Every morning without fail I enjoy a nice warm bowl of porridge with some honey. I find it sets me up for the day and gives me loads of energy first thing in the morning. I'd highly recommend it to anyone!"
Peggy also spoke of how blessed she feels to be surrounded by wonderful family, friends, and neighbours. Although she had no children, her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives have always felt like her own family and been a constant source of love and support.
She is especially grateful for her kind and dedicated carer and companion, Monique, along with the many carers who ensure she receives the very best of care.
