New special classes announced for two Athlone secondary schools
New autism-inclusive special classes have been announced for two secondary schools in Athlone.
The Marist College and Athlone Community College have been sanctioned with one new autism-inclusive special class each, it was announced on Monday.
The development was welcomed by local TD and Minister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, who described it as "a significant and practical step forward" for families across the region.
The Government said this week's announcement of an additional 32 new special classes nationally, brings to 464 the total number of new special classes approved for the 2026/27 school year.
"This is very positive news for Athlone and the wider Westmeath area," stated Kevin 'Boxer' Moran.
"The expansion of autism-inclusive special classes in both the Marist College and Athlone Community College will make a real difference for students and their families, ensuring they can access appropriate education supports within their own community.
"Keeping children within their local schools, alongside their peers, is a key priority," he added.
"These classes provide the structured, supportive environment needed while still promoting inclusion within mainstream education settings. It is essential that we continue to build capacity locally, and Athlone is clearly benefiting from that focus."
He acknowledged that ongoing planning would be needed in order to provide sufficient places locally for every child that needs one.
"I will continue to engage with the Department of Education to ensure Athlone and Westmeath receive the resources required," he said.
