Do you remember Athlone writer John Broderick?
John Broderick died in Bath, in May 1989 just two months short of his 65th birthday. He was well-known in his native Athlone as a novelist and also, of course, as the proprietor of Broderick’s Bakery in Connaught Street.
He was the subject of a short biographical study Something in the head: the life and work of John Broderick by the late Madeline Kingston, and his books have enjoyed quite a revival in recent years with new editions of some of his novels appearing from Lilliput Press and more titles forthcoming this year.
Now, 27 years after his death, Westmeath Arts Office is hoping to shine new light on John Broderick the man.
Did you know John Broderick in any way? Perhaps you worked in the bakery or worked in the gardens of ‘The Moorings’. Did you know him from Connaught Street as a neighbour?
Were you his solicitor, accountant or did you do secretarial work for him? Did you read his books when they first came out and if so, did you recognise some of the characters from real life?
If you knew John Broderick in any way, have anecdotes or stories about him, and would be willing to share your memories, the Arts Office in Westmeath County Council, would like to hear from you.
Even if your knowledge of John Broderick is second-hand, what you have to say could still be important, so please get in touch. If you know someone who knew John in any capacity, who may not see this article, please bring it to their attention and encourage them to become involved.
Local historian and author Gearoid O’Brien will be carrying out interviews with anyone who might have something to share – you might not consider your memories earth-shattering but they could help to provide a more rounded version of John Broderick.
Interviews will be conducted in a neutral venue - probably Athlone Library - but if you can’t come to us then perhaps we can come to you.
If you feel that you can help in any way, please drop an e-mail to athlib@westmeathcoco.ie or contact Lorna Farrell (or any staff member) in Athlone Library at 090-6442157 and leave your details.
This project is funded through the John Broderick Programme. Managed by Westmeath County Council in partnership with the Arts Council of Ireland.
