Council explore kayaking on the Shannon, as bike hire the priority

The provision of kayaking facilities on the Shannon in Athlone 's being explored, as bike hire is the main priority for summer, a recent council meeting heard.
Cllr Frankie Keena first brought a motion about bike and kayaking rental service in the vicinity of Athlone Marina and the greenway to the Athlone Moate Municipal District in October last, and asked for a full update on the progress of the plans at the latest meeting held in May.
The new bike hire being tendered is for heavier bikes for long-range cycling along the greenway, rather than short range bikes such as those already existing in Athlone town centre.
In response, the council executive said: "Work is ongoing in relation to the provision of recreational amenities in Athlone, with the establishment of a bike hire service identified as the priority for the summer 2026 season.
"Engagement has taken place with a potential provider, and discussions are ongoing with a view to agreeing a suitable location adjacent to the Greenway and progressing terms for a pilot project.
"The District is also exploring all options for the provision of a kayaking activity on the River Shannon which may be considered as a potential complementary addition."
