Testing tie for cup holders Athlone in women's second round draw
Holders Athlone Town have been drawn away to Peamount United in the draw for the Club Orange Women’s FAI Cup Second Round made today.
Athlone have yet to play Peamount away in the league this season, but did defeat the Dubliners 2-0 in a league clash in Athlone Town Stadium earlier this campaign.
At a live event in the National Sports Campus today, ex-Wexford forward Vanessa Ogbonna (who won the Women’s FAI Cup in 2019) joined FAI President Paul Cooke to help with the draw.
The draw also pitted four-time winners Wexford against Shamrock Rovers, while SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division leaders Galway United will meet Treaty United.
For the first time, teams from the Women’s Development League will take part in the competition with Bray Wanderers, CK United, Cobh Ramblers, Drogheda United, Dundalk, Finn Harps, Kerry, Longford Town and St. Patrick’s Athletic still to complete First Round fixtures.
The winners of the four First Round fixtures, involving teams from the Women’s Development League and non-league competitions, will progress through to the Second Round where 12 SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division teams.
The Second Round games will be played on the week ending Sunday, July 5t with fixture details to be confirmed in due course.
