In his role, O'Leary will oversee the strategic direction and development of the academy structure across the club.
The role will focus on player development, coach development, alignment of playing philosophy, academy standards, and creating clear pathways for young players within Athlone Town AFC.
O'Leary, a former goalkeeper with Athlone Town having represented the club from 2005-2007, brings significant experience in football development and coach education.
He has worked across elite youth football environments and is highly regarded for his leadership, professionalism, and ability to build strong development structures.
Speaking on his appointment, Danny said he is excited about the future in his new role with the club.
“The plans the club have for the first teams and the academy and how they see the club structure really excites me. We’re at a point where we can make a big change and make our Academy one of the best in the country," O'Leary said.
Club CEO, Steven Gray, stated that O'Leary's appointment was the result of a significant piece of work, between multiple departments.
"I want to thank Brian Shelley (Technical Director), Emerson Farrelly (Finance Manager) and Phelim Kilduff (HR Manager).
"Our new Academy Director was a standout candidate in the recruitment process. We have gotten to know him over the last number of weeks and we feel he will make a significantly positive impact on our academy players, parents and coaches.
"His appointment now enables us to have a strategic approach to player development in our academy and I look forward to seeing the results of this in the coming weeks, months and years," Gray said.
Technical Director Brian Shelley said that O'Leary was appointed to the position following a thorough interview process.
“He stood out immediately through his experience, leadership, and vision for player development. His appointment is a significant addition for the club and shows the ambition we have to continue building strong foundations across the academy," Shelley said.
