The keep at Athlone Castle is currently undergoing a series of works.

Athlone Castle reopening delayed until Spring 2027

The reopening of Athlone Castle is set to be pushed back beyond its anticipated Autumn 2026 date, with Westmeath County Council now indicating that the landmark attraction is not likely to welcome visitors again until next Spring.

The visitor centre closed to the public in October 2025 to facilitate a significant redevelopment programme aimed at enhancing the visitor experience at the historic site.

There are two projects earmarked for the site. Work to improve the public realm around the exterior of the castle, and to revamp the entrance approach, has been underway since June 2025 and is near completion. The total projected value for this is estimated to be €1.4m.

The second project is to provide an improved visitor centre experience, through new interpretation, facilities, and visitor journey enhancement. It also includes an upgrade of ageing utilities and facilities, including mechanical and engineering upgrades, and improvements in the courtyard and upper battlement areas.

The project is supported by €3.2 million in funding through Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme and is co-funded by the European Union and the Government of Ireland through the EU Just Transition Fund.

At the time of the closure, Athlone Castle management advised that the centre was expected to reopen in Autumn 2026.

However, essential repairs were recently announced for the castle keep, at an estimated cost over €420,000. The project includes upgrading and replacing the roof area, including fibreglass gutters, with OPW carpenters working alongside an external contractor to remove and replace damaged fittings and gutter linings.

The works, which began on Friday, May 15, are expected to take approximately eight weeks, subject to weather and access conditions.

Once complete, the second project, the further enhancement works at the visitor centre, is due to begin..

Responding to queries from the Westmeath Independent about the reopening timeline, Westmeath County Council said substantial investment and construction activity are currently underway at Athlone Castle.

"Works underway at Athlone Castle include the works to the Keep in partnership with the OPW; the public realm works in front of the Castle which is funded by Failte Ireland, TII, the OPW and WCC; and the major €3.2 million redevelopment to enhance the visitor experience within the Castle which is funded by Failte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme through the EU Just Transition Fund.

"All projects are running concurrently, with the public realm works and the works on the Keep concluding over the summer. The delivery of the Just Transition project is a substantial project, and the reopening of the Castle is likely to extend into 2027, with a view to welcoming visitors to Athlone Castle for the 2027 tourist season."

The overall refurbishment is due to focus on "revitalising Athlone Castle to provide a more enhanced visitor experience", including improvements to "ageing utilities and mechanical systems, a reconfiguration of the visitor centre layout and interpretation, and enhancements to the courtyard, reception and retail areas."
