Westmeath club football first round fixtures confirmed
The first round fixtures in the Westmeath GAA club football championships have been released, with the clash of Moate All Whites and Tubberclair set to take place on Friday, July 24.
Páirc Chiaráin, Athlone will host the Section B clash of the All Whites and 2025 intermediate champions Tubberclair (throw-in 7.30pm). At the same time, Tyrrellspass will meet Killucan at TEG Cusack Park.
Shandonagh and neighbours Milltown - the two sides regarded as the frontrunners for the Westmeath intermediate title - will meet on the same night in Kinnegad. Meanwhile Kilbeggan Shamrocks will begin their Junior 1 championship campaign against Ballynacargy in Ballymore.
Tang will meet Athlone at Hogan Park, Moate on Saturday, July 25 (throw-in 5.30) and this will form a double header with the Section A clash of Caulry and Division 1 league champions Mullingar Shamrocks (7.15).
Flanagan Cup holders The Dows will face local rivals St Loman's, Mullingar (the 2023 and 2024 champions) at TEG Cusack Park on the same evening, and this eagerly awaited clash will be preceded by the meeting of Garrycastle and Coralstown-Kinnegad.
On the same evening, Maryland will face neighbours Ballymore in the intermediate championship (Tubberclair, 5.15), with Rosemount travelling to Shandonagh to take on St Mary's, Rochfortbridge.
With the All-Ireland SFC final scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 26, there will be no club championship fixtures in Westmeath on that day. This means there will be a number of games on Monday night, July 27 including the intermediate championship clash of Castledaly and Milltownpass (Kilbeggan, 7.30).
The start of the club championships was put back until the weekend of July 24-26 in order to give a longer break to county players who were involved in Westmeath's thrilling but gruelling campaign which involved Delaney Cup glory and seven matches overall.
With only three teams qualifying for the knockout stages from Section A of the senior and intermediate championships in 2026, the group fare should prove more exciting this year. Four teams qualified from Section A in previous years, leading to a real lack of jeopardy and the sort of bite that is associated with championship football.
