Tributes paid to "friend of many" from Ballygar following untimely passing

Local sports clubs and organisations have paid tribute to the late Tom Doyle who passed peacefully on Wednesday (August 5) after a long illness.

The Ballygar resident was held in high esteem by all who knew him and the condolences published on rip.ie show the respect in which he was held by family members, friends, colleagues and teammates.

Roscommon & District Football (RDFL) club, Shiven Rovers, with whom Tom played from a young age, said the defender was "part of teams that created unforgettable memories for our club" and "despite being unwell" was always "willing to help out at the club".

"Tom will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passing at such a young age leaves a deep and painful void in our club. His name will live on through the memories we shared and the stories that will be retold," the club stated.

A social media post from the RDFL described Tom as a "fine man and fantastic footballer".

GAA club St Brendan's, with whom Tom played until 2025, said Tom was a "friend to many".

"Even more recently during sickness, while unavailable to play, he always sent his best wishes to his teammates on match day. His strong support was a testament to his character, and how he bravely fought his battle," the club stated.

Meanwhile, Athlone Springs Hotel, where Tom worked for a number of years, also posted an online tribute, describing him as "simply one of the nicest people you could ever meet".

"He always had a smile on his face, time for everyone. He was loved by so many, and the friendships he made here were lifetime friendships.

"Athlone Springs Hotel held a very special place in Tom’s life. It was here that he met the love of his life, Triona, and it was our privilege to celebrate their wedding day with them here.

"We have so many fond memories of them both together here over the years. We know he will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him," the hotel said.

Tomás’s requiem mass will take place on Saturday (August 8) at 11.30am in St.Mary’s Church, Ballygar, Co. Galway (F42 YD83), followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
