Parking closures in Market Place.

Lengthy parking closure now underway near Athlone Castle

The parking spaces around Athlone Castle have now been taken out of use to facilitate the next phase of the Athlone Castle Interpretation, Facilities and Visitor Journey Enhancement Project.

As of Tuesday, August 4, parking half of the parking at Market Place had been cordoned off, as well as a number of spaces on Main Street to the rear of the castle.

On-street parking spaces at Market Place, along with spaces on Castle Street and Main Street, will be temporarily occupied by the project’s works contractor for an estimated six-month period.

Originally, the closure was due to take effect from Monday, July 13, however after backlash from local businesses, the closure was postponed to allow for accessibility over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, when Athlone's two prominent festivals, the Feile Na Sionainne and Athlone River Festival, attracted thousands of visitors to the town.
