Live chess with medieval twist in Athlone this Sunday
As part of the ongoing Heritage Week celebrations a live chess spectacle will take place in Athlone this Sunday (August 23).
The event brings to the fore the mild rivalry between the Connaught and Leinster sides of the town, which are separated by the river Shannon. Aptly named 'Checkmate!' the board battle will be held at the Abbey Road Graveyard, near Radisson Blu, on Sunday, 2.30pm.
Organised by Athlone Castle in collaboration with Chess Bud Partner, the game will feature Jonathan O'Connor, coach, and Irish Senior Champion, serving as the emcee. The expert commentary by the Correspondence Chess International Master will bring strategy and skill to life throughout the match.
Apart from standard chess games, another highlight of the event is a life-size chess battle, where players dressed in medieval inspired costumes will compete on a giant chessboard. Participating youth players will also receive a certificate and a token to take home.
The Heritage Week event is supported by the Heritage Council under the Heritage Stewardship Fund 2026.
One can be an audience, or take part in this free chess event. However, Booking in advance is required only for children who wish to take part as the live chess pieces. Checkmate! will take place on Sunday (August 23), 2:30pm – 5:00pm at Abbey Road Graveyard, Athlone.
