Athlone Town mourns death of club's chairman during famous 1975 meeting with AC Milan

Athlone Town football club has paid tribute to its former chairman, Aidan Lee Snr, following his death last week at the age of 83.

Mr Lee, of Mount Temple and formerly Retreat Heights in Athlone, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 18.

His time as chairman of the club in the mid-70s coincided with its famous UEFA cup campaign of 1975, which included a two-legged tie against AC Milan that saw the first leg finish scoreless at St Mel's Park.

A businessman originally from Cootehill in Cavan, Mr Lee moved to Athlone in 1965 as manager of the Singers store in Custume Place. A decade later, he and his wife Ann opened their 'Lee Fabrics' business at the Athlone Shopping Centre.

In an online tribute, Athlone Town highlighted his contribution and enduring connection to the club.

"Everyone at Athlone Town AFC is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our former club chairman, Aidan Lee Snr," it said.

"Aidan was a central figure in the history of our club, leading Athlone Town AFC as chairman during one of our most historic eras including our legendary European campaign against AC Milan in 1975.

"His leadership, passion, and dedication helped put Athlone Town on the European football map, creating cherished memories that live on in the heart of our club and community today.

"Beyond his incredible contribution off the pitch, Aidan always held a deep love for Athlone Town AFC and maintained a special connection with the club throughout his life.

"We extend our sincere condolences to Aidan’s family, his former colleagues, and his many friends at this sad time," the club added.

The Mount Temple Active Retirement Group also paid tribute to Mr Lee, saying: "He was a treasured, respected and committed member of our group, always so willing to take part in our activities and offer his knowledge and expertise.

"He loved having the joke and the bit of banter with the members. We will miss you Aidan."

Aidan Lee Snr was predeceased by his beloved wife Anne, brothers Pat, Michael, Fr Hugh (MHM), Fr Terry (MHM), Tommy, Eddie and Brendan, and sister Annie (Montgomery).

He is sadly missed by his loving daughters Sharon (Daly) and Victoria, sons Terry and Aidan Jr., sisters Mary (Miami, USA), Jo Patterson (Ballybay, Monaghan), son-in-law Alan, daughter-in-law Irene, adoring grandchildren Jason, Mark, Laura, Rachel, Barry, Eoin, and Grace, in-laws, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, great neighbours and many friends.

His funeral Mass took place in Corpus Christi Church, Mount Temple, on Saturday followed by burial in Donegan Cemetery.
