Moate event to examine how AI is changing Ireland

"What happens to Ireland as AI changes the world around us?" That's the thought-provoking question being explored by speakers at an event in Moate's Tuar Ard Arts Centre this Thursday (September 10) at 7pm.

The event, entitled Shaping Ireland in the age of AI will feature contributions from three speakers who will look at various ways in which artificial intelligence is likely to shape local communities in Ireland in the years to come.

The speakers will include Moate native Louise McCormack, who contributes to international AI standards through the National Standards Authority of Ireland, and whose doctoral research at the University of Galway has focused on how AI systems can be evaluated for trustworthiness.

Louise's talk at the event on Thursday is entitled 'From Folklore to Feeds: How AI Is Changing the Stories That Shape Ireland'.

Speaking about the event, she said: "The goal is to keep building the AI community in the Midlands, helping people build confidence and understanding around AI, and making sure Midlands voices are part of shaping how AI develops in Ireland."

Also speaking on the night will be Jonny O’Dwyer, an AI researcher and lecturer at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS).

His talk is entitled 'Ethics & AI Systems: Whose Values Should AI Learn?'.

The third speaker addressing attendees at the Tuar Ard will be Mícheál O’Neill, the founder of AI With Kelso and the CEO of Kelso Digital, who will discuss 'AI and the Future of Work in Irish Towns and Villages'.

A description of the Moate event states: "No technical knowledge is needed. Just curiosity and an interest in what AI might mean for Ireland, our communities and the way we live and work."
