Moate end long wait as Loman's edge Tubberclair in epic

The Westmeath SFC quarter-finals certainly served up huge drama and entertainment over the weekend, with Moate All Whites overcoming Athlone and St Loman's, Mullingar edging out Tubberclair after extra-time.

Moate's 4-11 to 2-14 win over Athlone on Saturday means the All Whites will contest their first senior championship semi-final since 1997, when the club last lifted the Flanagan Cup.

Tobby Conteh scored two of the Moate goals at TEG Cusack Park, with the others coming from Harry Niall and Darragh Delaney. Remarkably, Moate also scored four goals in their win over Athlone in the group stages.

Despite a tally of 0-8 from the outstanding Shane Allen, Athlone were left to rue the concession of four goals in addition to several missed chances.

Defending champions The Downs will be Moate's semi-final opponents on the weekend of September 26/27.

Tubberclair and 2024 champions St Loman's were involved in an almighty battle yesterday (Sunday), with the Mullingar side eventually prevailing by 1-25 to 2-20 after extra-time.

John Heslin scored 1-11 for Loman's, his goal coming from a penalty, with his tally also including four two-pointers, while Kealan Connell and Oisín O’Meara struck for the Tubberclair goals. Fred Kelleher had a late chance to win it for Tubberclair in normal time, but he hit the ball wide under pressure from St Loman’s substitute Cillian Plunkett.

The Mullingar side got their noses in front in extra-time and, despite a valiant effort from the 2025 intermediate champions, a late point by Westmeath star Sam McCartan sealed victory.

St Loman's will now meet Coralstown/Kinnegad in what will be a repeat of last year's semi-final between the sides.

In the intermediate championship, meanwhile, Rosemount claimed their second win over neighbours Ballymore in the space of two weekends, but there was only one point between the sides in the end, 0-16 to 3-6.

Rosemount will now meet Milltown in one of the semi-finals. The Rathconrath outfit have been seen as one of the frontrunners for the Peter Geraghty Cup from the outset, but the Rosemount men will be hoping to spring a surprise.

The other semi-final will see Shandonagh - who claimed an emphatic quarter-final win over Ballinagore (5-17 to 3-6) - take on St Malachy's.

The Westmeath Junior 1 Football Championship semi-finalists have also been decided and the prospect of a tantalising local derby final between St Joseph's and Kilbeggan Shamrocks remains on.

Kilbeggan claimed a 1-15 to 0-13 win over Killucan with their goal coming from Darragh Coffey, while Nigel Scally contributed 0-9. The Downs (winners over Ballynacargy in their quarter-final) now stand in Kilbeggan's way.

St Joseph's were comprehensive winners over Athlone's second team in Mount Temple yesterday, with Jordan McDonnell scoring 3-3, while Dean Slevin and Alan Conlon also bagged goals. Richie Greene was Athlone's top scorer with 0-7 while Ryan Gaffey contributed the Shannonsiders' goal.

The Streamstown based outfit will meet St Loman's in their semi-final. St Loman's won their derby clash against Mullingar Shamrocks last Friday night.
