Athlone woman finalist in National Brown Bread Baking Competition

An Athlone woman was one of four finalists who participated in the final of the National Brown Bread Baking Competition at the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan Tullamore this week.

Ballykeeran resident, Therese Lonergan progressed from the semi-final stage of the competition on Tuesday to compete for the main prize on Thursday afternoon.

Although unsuccessful, Therese received a €500 Euronics gift card and a goody bag for her brown bread making exploits.

County Westmeath was also represented in the National Brown Bread Baking competition by 87 year old Bernadette Ennis.

The respective Senior and Junior National Brown Bread Baking Competitions, which is sponsored by Euronics and held in association with the National Ploughing Association (NPA) and the Irish Countrywomen's Association (ICA). were won by Dublin natives, Olivia Nash and Cara Wall.

The 95th National Ploughing Championships came to a close on Thursday after three days in Screggan, Tullamore, with 75,000 visitors attending on the final day and 243,000 attending across the three days.

It has since been announced that the 2027 National Ploughing Championships will take place in Boherkill Farm, Rathangan, Co. Kildare.
