Athlone assault charge deemed to serious to be heard at district court

A man charged with assaulting a woman, causing her to lose two of her teeth, is to be sent forward for trial to the Circuit Court.

Keith Grehan (36), with an address at Beechville, Athlone, appeared before Athlone District Court on Wednesday, September 9, charged with threats to kill and assault causing harm to a woman on Central Terrace, Northgate Street, Athlone, on October 5, 2024.

The court heard how, at 10.41pm on that date, Gardaí were made aware of an incident on Northgate Street in which a male and a female were having an argument.

It is alleged that the female walked away from Mr Grehan, who allegedly followed her, pushed her and punched her in the face, knocking out some of her teeth.

The court heard the Garda evidence would be that Mr Grehan was cautioned and arrested, and an ambulance was called for the injured party who had lost two teeth and suffered a possible fracture to her jaw.

Judge Cronin, noting a number of medical reports together with photographs of the injured party, deemed the case to be unsuitable for summary disposal in the district court and refused jurisdiction. Mr Grehan will reappear on October 7 for further directions. He was remanded on continuing bail until that date.
