Man appears in court on charge of stealing deposit for windows

A pensioner charged with stealing a combined total of €4,500 in the form of cash deposits for windows is due to reappear before Athlone District Court next month.

Eamonn Mahon (72), with an address at Church View, Bastion Court, Connaught Street, Athlone, Co Westmeath, was brought before Judge Patricia Cronin at Athlone District Court on Wednesday, September 9, following his arrest earlier that morning.

He was charged with dishonestly, by deception, inducing a woman at Ballymahon Road, Athlone, to pay him €800 as a cash deposit for windows, and with stealing that €800 from her on October 1 of last year.

When charged before court, his respective replies were “I didn’t intend to do it”, and “I didn’t intend to do it. I wanted to do the job”.

A bench warrant was also in existence, issued by Judge James Faughnan in July following his failure to appear before a sitting of Ballinasloe District Court.

He currently has two similar charges before that court, including the theft of €3,700 from a woman at an address in Ahascragh, Co Galway, and of stealing that amount from her on the same date.

Mr Mahon was previously given bail on July 1, 2026, but failed to appear on July 23, as directed. The bench warrant was executed before Athlone District Court, and Judge Cronin remanded the accused man on continuing bail to reappear before Ballinasloe District Court on October 24.

Legal aid was granted under circumstances where Mr Mahon is receiving a state pension, and he entered into a bail bond to reappear before Athlone District Court on October 28.

Judge Cronin made an order for disclosure directly to the defendant while he waits for a solicitor to come on record.
