Athlone Town crowned champions without kicking a ball

Athlone Town are Women’s Premier Division champions for the third year in a row after Galway United's 3-0 defeat away to Wexford last night (Saturday).

There was a strong air of inevitability about Athlone retaining their crown in recent weeks as title rivals Shelbourne and Galway dropped points on a number of occasions. In contrast, Athlone have proved relentless in chalking up victories and they have been duly rewarded with more success.

Having lost only one league game this season, Athlone have 50 points from 19 games, 12 points ahead of both Galway and Shels with three fixtures left.

The fact that they are now league champions once again is a boost to the Athlone camp ahead of the Women's FAI Cup final against Shelbourne at Tallaght Stadium today (Sunday), kick-off 3.30pm - see here for preview.

Lily Agg's charges are now aiming to complete the double - a feat that Athlone managed last season when John O'Sullivan was in charge.

Athlone still have to play Galway (Saturday, October 3) and Shelbourne (October 17 at Tolka Park) before the end of the season. These are fixtures which looked like they would be crucial in deciding the destination of the title. However, they are now effectively dead rubbers in terms of results.

With Athlone having two home fixtures left this season – the aforementioned clash against Galway and the final match against Cork City on October 24 - there are two opportunities for Town skipper Hannah Waesch to be presented with the Women's Premier Division trophy.
