Double dreams dashed as Athlone Town succumb to Shelbourne

Athlone Town's 'double-double' aspirations failed to materialise in Tallaght Stadium on Sunday afternoon when they were defeated 3-1 by Shelbourne in the Club Orange Women's FAI Cup final.

Athlone Town, crowned Premier Division champions on Saturday night, were hoping to repeat the club's 2025 campaign heroics when they claimed both the Premier Division and FAI Cup titles, but it wasn't to be as a dominant Shelbourne deservedly won a largely one-sided game.

First half goals from Shelbourne's Halle Harcourt, Alex Kavanagh and Maeve Wollmer set the tone for the final's eventual outcome and despite showing periods of resistance in the second half, a late goal from Athlone Town captain Hannah Waesch was the sole response from Lily Agg's charges.

The league champions return to Premier Division action on Saturday when they host third placed Galway United in Lissywollen at 4.30pm.
