Public urged to join Athlone Town trophy lift in 'special champions celebration'

Athlone Town FC has encouraged people to come out for a 'special champions celebration' this Saturday, after the Town became the first women's side to achieve three league titles in a row last weekend.

Last weekend's FAI Cup final defeat against Shelbourne prevented Athlone from claiming back-to-back Cup triumphs. But less than 24 hours earlier, Galway Utd's defeat against Wexford FC in the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division confirmed a hat-trick of league titles for Athlone.

Ironically, it will be Galway Utd who provides the opposition for Athlone this Saturday at Athlone Town Stadium (kick-off: 4.30pm), and the FAI has confirmed that the league trophy will be presented to the Athlone team on the occasion.

After Saturday's game, Athlone will have two league fixtures to complete.

In an online post, the club said: 'Our women’s team host Galway Utd this Saturday in a special 'Champions Reception' following their league triumph on Saturday night. Come out and celebrate with the champions as they take on a strong Galway side in what promises to be a fantastic afternoon of football'.
