Longford Westmeath Argentina Society AGM this week

Following one of its busiest years in some time, the Longford Westmeath Argentina Society is to hold its AGM this Thursday, October 1, at Bloomfield House Hotel in Mullingar.

Founded in 1989, the Society draws membership from across Longford and Westmeath, and from other counties as well, all sharing an interest in fostering and maintaining the historical links between the Irish midlands and Argentina.

One of the things that is so fascinating about the fact that Argentina was the land of choice for so many people from Westmeath and Longford is that it is the only non-English-speaking country which saw large numbers of Irish emigrate.

Unusually too, it was really the only country where Irish emigrants embedded themselves so firmly in agriculture.

Links and contact since persists between many families and their cousins in South America.

The AGM takes place at 8pm and all are more than welcome to attend.
