Talented local soccer player Sophie Byrne has achieved further international recognition following her call-up today (Wednesday) to play for the Republic of Ireland Under-19s.

Sophie, a student at Coláiste Chiaráin, plays in the League of Ireland Premier Division for Peamount Utd, and is one of 20 players called upon for upcoming UEFA European Championships qualifiers against Armenia, Georgia and Bulgaria.

The squad also includes current Athlone Town player Emma Mooney, from Offaly.

The matches will all take place in Bulgaria between October 7 and 13.

Sophie is one of nine players to receive first call-ups at this level, including goalkeeper Laura Fanning, defenders Holly O’Hagan and Amelia Fahey, midfielders Alex Devoy, Tess Finn, Beatrice Silickatie, Aoife Colbert Martin, as well as striker Ciara Breslin.

International Lead Coach Chelsea Noonan will be assisted by Gary Seery as they set about topping Group B2 and taking a step closer to the finals tournament in Hungary.
