Athlone Gardaí seek funding for new CCTV system, council says

Local Gardaí are working on acquiring appropriate funding to implement an up-to-date CCTV system in Athlone, according to Athlone-Moate Municipal District.

A brief information update on the matter was given by District Manager Jackie Finney at the council's latest meeting, and came on the back of independent councillor John Gibbons's recent motion for the district to engage with the Department of Justice, to have a CCTV system in Athlone that is 'operational and adequate' for the needs and safety of the public and property in the town.

When the matter was discussed at the council's September meeting, councillors described the CCTV system currently in use in Athlone as 'antiquated' and 'in desperate need' of urgent updating.

Cllr Gibbons again raised the issue at the October meeting and Ms Finney said that the council has met with the local superintendent on the matter.

She said she has been advised that local Gardaí are seeking funding for the project and that she expects action to be taken 'as soon as possible'.
