Athlone Town remain hopeful of league play-off position

It will be a local derby with added impetus for Athlone Town when the team makes the short distance to Bishopsgate to play Longford Town in their last League of Ireland First Division fixture of the season tonight (Friday) at 7.45pm.

Athlone remain in contention to secure a play-off position on the league table but have to defeat their close rivals and hope results go in their favour elsewhere to ensure a continuation to their league season.

Sean O'Connor's charges know if they defeat Longford (who are one point clear of Athlone) tonight, they will replace them in fifth place on the league table (the final play-off position).

Athlone Town also need Treaty United to prevent a Cobh Ramblers win in Markets Field on Friday night if they are to achieve a play-off position.

Fourth placed Kerry could also mathematically be caught, but a defeat at home to Cork City and a goal difference turnaround of three is required.
