Athlone Town pay tribute to career of Noelle Murray

Athlone Town has paid tribute to Noelle Murray who has confirmed her decision to retire from women's football.

The experienced striker signed for the club at the start of the 2026 season and closed her career with a fifth Premier Division title as Athlone comprehensively retained their league crown.

Murray brought a longstanding career with Shelbourne to a close in December 2025 before signing for a final playing season with Athlone Town.

She made 25 appearances for Athlone this campaign netting the opening goal in a 1-1 draw against her former club at Tolka Park on Saturday.

Murray's low drive on nine minutes was cancelled out in the 52nd minute by Shelbourne substitute Rebecca Watkins.

During her career, the highly decorated Murray made 272 appearances scoring 162 goals.

As well as winning five Women's Premier Division titles, the highly decorated striker also claimed seven Women's FAI Cup honours and one Scottish Women's Premier League medal while playing with Glasgow City.

Reflecting on Murray's career, Athlone Town said the striker's achievements in the game were an "incredible accomplishment".

"Although you may have only been with us for one season, Noelle Murray, the impact you’ve had on this club will last forever.

"Thank you for everything you’ve given to the club, Noelle. You leave as a league champion, with a legacy that will never be forgotten."

Athlone complete their Premier Division campaign with a home fixture against bottom of the table Cork City on Saturday evening at 5pm.
