Athlone Town trio named on PFAI Team of the Year
Three Athlone Town players have been selected on the PFA Ireland Women’s Premier Division Team of the Year.
The trio consists of local star Kayleigh Shine, midfielder Hannah Waesch and striker Dana Scheriff, with the team based on a voting process involving players.
In addition, Waesch and Scheriff are nominated for the PFAI Women’s Player of the Year award.
Waesch was an inspiring captain of the Athlone team which won the Women’s Premier Division title for the third season in a row, also reaching the FAI Cup final where they lost out to Shelbourne. Fellow American Scheriff finished the league campaign as top scorer.
The other nominee is Shelbourne's Alex Kavanagh and the winner will be announced at the PFAI awards on Saturday, November 21.
Madison Gibson, the only Athlone player chosen for a Player of the Month award this season, did not make the cut for the Team of the Year.
Shelbourne, who just about edged out Galway United (on goal difference) for second place in the league as well as winning the FAI Cup, have three players on the team.
Athlone ended the season with a 4-2 home win over basement side Cork City last Saturday. The aforementioned Gibson, Waesch and Scheriff were all on the scoresheet, with Athlone's fourth goal coming from Alexis Strickland.
Lily Agg's side finished 12 points ahead of both Shelbourne and Galway.
