Westmeath Independent Community & Sports Awards in association with Westmeath County Council

Outstanding Achievement Finalist: Oisín Lane

Oisín Lane is one of Ireland’s leading race walkers and an emerging figure on the international athletics scene.

From Ballymore, Oisín represents Mullingar Harriers AC and has established himself as one of the country’s top male race-walking athletes.

Lane’s rise through the sport has been impressive. Having progressed from underage international competition to senior level at a young age, he demonstrated considerable potential through a series of outstanding performances in national and international competitions.

In 2024, he won the Irish senior 20km race walking title in a personal best of 1:24:12 and represented Ireland at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, finishing an impressive 23rd.

He continued his progress in 2025, winning another national 20km title and recording a personal best of 1:23:06 at the World University Games in Bochum, Germany, where he finished 11th. Later that year, he represented Ireland at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, finishing 28th in the 35km race walk in 2:41:36.

One of his most significant performances came at this year’s European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Competing in the men’s half-marathon race walk, Lane produced a superb personal best of 1:27:09 to finish 11th in Europe. His performance demonstrated his ability to compete with some of the continent’s best athletes.

Lane’s personal bests also include 2:31:53 for 35km and 40:25.99 for the 10,000m track walk. His achievements have earned him five national championship titles and an Irish indoor national title.

Considering the ability and the dedication he has shown thus far, the 24-year-old has the potential to achieve further success on the European and world stage in the demanding discipline of race walking.

Oisín is coached by his dad Michael Lane, a former Athlone Community College teacher who previously coached World Championship medal winners Olive Loughnane and Gillian O’Sullivan.

Oisín’s sister Aisling is also an accomplished athlete who has claimed national honours in race walking.

The Outstanding Achievement finalists are Oisin Lane, Matthew Whittaker and Conor Hand.

The Outstanding Achievement category is sponsored by DPD Ireland.
