Gardai investigating bank holiday weekend assaults
Gardai are this week investigating a number of assaults in the town over the bank holiday weekend. They are investigating the circumstances of a stabbing in Connaught Gardens on the west side of town during the early hours of Saturday morning. A man was brought to Portiuncula Hospital where he is still receiving treatment for his injuries after being stabbed. His injuries are not life threatening. Earlier on Saturday morning, in a separate incident a woman received facial injuries while in Browne"s Bar on Connaught Street and Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact the station. An ambulance was called and the woman was brought to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, but she has since been discharged. Gardai are also investigating an incident at Bower View on Friday night. Between 9.30pm and 10pm on Friday at Bower View a man in his twenties was set upon by two males and two females who assaulted him and robbed him of cash. He received bruises, but no major injuries. Gardai are also investigating a raid on Boyle Sports bookmakers in the town on Monday morning. Between 9.30am and 10.30am on Monday two hooded raiders entered Boyle Sports and took a small amount of cash. They were unarmed and it has not yet been ascertained how they got away. Gardai are appealing for anybody who saw anything suspicious either on Monday morning or in the days leading up to the raid to contact Athlone Garda Station. Also on Monday morning a small group of people entered Tesco in Baylough and stole alcohol. They left in a car, which was later stopped in Moylough, Co Galway. A male and a female, both from Galway, were arrested and brought to Ballinasloe Garda Station for questioning. They are due to appear before Athlone District Court next month on charges arising out of the incident.
