Thomastown Golf Society AGM The Annual General Meeting of Thomastown Golf Society took place in Millars of Ballydangan on Tuesday, February 28, with a big turnout of members present. The society's secretary Brid Moore extended a warm welcome to all present and extended votes of sympathy to the members who had bereavements in their families during the past year. The month of January was particularly poignant for the society as they attended funerals of two of their playing members, former President Ken O'Neill and Olive Hynes. Their presence in the society is greatly missed by all members who extend deepest sympathy to their children and extended families. The death of Brian Lenihan TD was another sad time for all in the society as the Lenihan family are great friends of the Thomastown Club and very well respected throughout the area. Brian was a gentleman and competent statesman and it was fitting that their great friend Pat Kilroy suggested planting a tree in his honour. Pat procured the tree and it was duly planted on the evening of the Annual Lenihan Golf Competition. Brid, in her report, stated that all competitions were very well supported throughout the year as were the outings to Ennis and Athlone. The year began with the Millennium Cup competition and drive-in on March 14, 2011, and ended with the Jackie Flynn Memorial Cup competition. Competitions were held for juniors on Monday evenings and sincere thanks was extended to the organisers and helpers of same. Matchplay was keenly contested and the winner was Jimmy Flynn, while the 2011 golfer-of-the-year were Claire Dolphin and Paddy O'Brien. Another highlight of the calendar of events was the annual Christmas party in December which was also well attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Millars of Ballydangan who as always were so efficient with their service and provided a sumptuous meal which was followed by music provided by the very popular Seamus Mulvey and his Roadshow. Secretary Brid, on behalf of the society extended thanks to all their sponsors who are so loyal and whose generosity is much appreciated. She thanked the Naughton family including Packie, Nancy and Patrick, who are always so gracious and accommodating to the members. She thanked Margaret Fallon for her coverage of all competitions and events in the local newspaper. Brid paid tribute to the outgoing President Martha Callinan and outgoing Captain Lil Shine who have being great ambassadors for the club throughout the year, and not forgetting the hard-working committee who give of their time and expertise so willingly. Brid concluded by wishing the incoming officers and committee the very best of luck and hoped everyone has a safe and healthy 2012.
