Stadium Golf Classic moves to Athlone

THE third ever Athlone Town FC Stadium Midlands Golf Classic will take place at Athlone Golf Club, it has been announced by Athlone Town Stadium Ltd. The stadium project team decided to relocate this year"s to Athlone Golf Club after previously hosting the event at Woodbrook Golf Club in Dublin over the past two years. Stadium project manager, Tom Burke, said the event has been brought back to Athlone due to popular demand in the Midlands region. 'The previous two golf classics were hugely successful at Woodbrook Golf Club in Dublin and we are extremely grateful to Woodbrook Golf Club for their co-operation and organisation in recent years. However, following many requests from Midlands-based golf enthusiasts, the Stadium Project team felt it important to host our third annual golf classic at the delightful and scenic Athlone Golf Club,' Tom said. He continued: 'The purpose of this golf classic is to raise much-needed funds to help repay borrowings raised for the construction of the Athlone Town stadium in Lissywoollen. As can be seen phase one of the project is now fully complete, but more remains to be done. And while the project team has been successful in attracting substantial National Lottery funding for the project, this is always subject to local financial contributions. Although the stadium is in regular use and the facility is regarded as one of the best League of Ireland grounds in the country, the project team will not complete our work until all borrowings are repaid.' The cost of entering a team of four into the competition is €300, from 12pm with dinner, and, to accommodate the earlier riser from 8am to 12pm, the price is €180 without dinner. The golf classic can also be supported by way of tee and green sponsorship at a cost of €100. Anybody wishing to enter a team or provide sponsorship for the tournament should forward a cheque to Athlone Town Stadium Ltd., Magazine Road, Athlone, or for further details contact any of the following project team members, Cieran Temple, Martin Egan, Michael Ganly, Paddy McCaul, Tom Fitzgerald, Tony Kilmartin or Tom Burke.
