New AIT degrees combine Law with Business and Accounting

Students receiving their Leaving Cert results this week have the option of applying for a place on two new business degree courses which are starting at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) next month. This will not interfere with any offer of a college place which the student may receive from the CAO. The new four-year degrees offer the prospect of obtaining double honours qualifications in law with business or accounting. Application to the Bachelor of Business and Law (Honours) and the BA (Honours) in Accounting and Law is directly to the Admissions Office at the institute. Students undertaking the programmes will obtain an in-depth critical understanding of the complementary areas of business, accounting and law. They will learn the fundamental theories, concepts, principles and practices of the business, accountancy and legal professions. Both degrees will exempt graduates from the preliminary examination of the Law Society of Ireland, should they wish to progress to become qualified as a solicitor. According to John Cusack, Head of AIT's Business School: "The combination of law with business or accounting which these degrees offer, will enable graduates to pursue job opportunities in the law; in general business, accounting, banking, taxation, insurance, teaching or journalism." As this is the first year that the courses will run, there are no cut-off points in relation to the degrees. However, Leaving Certificate applicants will be required to hold grade C3 at higher level in two subjects, plus grade D3 at ordinary level in four other subjects in the Leaving Certificate. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish). Applicants from FETAC candidates and potential mature students are also welcome. Students interested in learning more about the new degrees should contact AIT's Admissions Office. Applications should be made directly to the Admissions Office in Athlone to email admissions@ait.ie or by phone to 090 646 8130/646 8131. Application forms and further information is available online at www.ait.ie.
