Former Westmeath chairman in line for Central Council seat
Former long-serving Westmeath GAA chairman Séamus " Faoláin has been nominated for the position of Central Council delegate. The Castletown-Geoghegan man took a complete break from the county board executive after he stepped down as chairman after more than 20 years in 2007, but made no secret at the time of his desire to represent the Lake County at Central Council level some time in the future. Now retired from teaching, he has been nominated for the position along with Des Maguire (Mullingar Shamrocks), Richard Browne (Maryland) and Tony Robinson (Ballinagore), for the much sought-after position which is being vacated by Liam Martin (St. Loman's) under the five-year rule. " Faoláin has confirmed that he will be going forward for the role, however it's unclear at present whether he will face opposition from the other candidates. The Westmeath county convention takes place in the Hilamar Hotel, Kinnegad on Monday week, December 14 (7.30pm) and among the motions which will be debated is one to make all areas within Cusack Park non-smoking. Both the Football and Hurling Board conventions will be held this Thursday (December 10) in Cusack Park, Mullingar, at 7.30pm and 9pm respectively. Elsewhere, Tom Farrell and Liam Davitt are expected to be installed as chairman and vice-chairman of the county board at next week's county convention, while Des Doolin has been nominated to contest the positions of secretary and assistant secretary against Pat Lynagh and James Savage respectively. The positions of treasurer (Denis Coyne), Development Officer (Pat Collins), Officer for Irish Language (Aidan Davitt), Public Relations Officer (Pat Reilly), and Coaching Officer (Billy Foley) are set to go unopposed, while Billy Flanagan and Tony Robinson have been nominated for the post of Youth Officer. Joe Martin, Sean Sheridan and Tony Robinson have been nominated as Leinster Council delegates. Trevor Farrell and Kieran Martin (both Maryland) are in the running for the position of Under-21 delegate, while five from Albert Lowry, Michael McHugh, Denis Coyne, Francie Donoghue, Shay McDermott, Sean O'Brien, Feichin Flynn and Jim Whelan will be selected as Leinster Convention delegates. Meanwhile, little change can be expected on the Football and Hurling Boards. Mullingar Shamrocks' Des Maguire will maintain his position as chairman of the Football Board, with Liam Gavin as vice-chairman, Tommy Glennon as secretary, and Joe Malone filling the position of treasurer. Seamus Browne and Eddie Newman have been nominated for the post of assistant secretary.
