Almost 12% of Westmeath residents are non-Irish

More than one in nine Westmeath residents are non-Irish nationals according to the latest figures from the Census 2011 results. Statistics released this week revealed that there were 10,130 non-Irish nationals living in Westmeath at the time of the Census, accounting for 11.9% of the population of the county, compared to 12% for the State as a whole. In Roscommon, 10.8% of the population were non-Irish nationals. In Westmeath, Polish nationals were the largest non-Irish national group, but in Roscommon, UK nationals were the most numerous. Of the 10,130 non-Irish nationals resident in Westmeath, 2,345 were Polish nationals - the largest non-Irish nationality in the county, followed by UK nationals with 1,929 persons. In Roscommon, 2,790 of the 6,897 non-Irish nationals resident in the county, were UK nationals, followed by Polish nationals with 1,365 persons. Some 677 of the non-Irish nationals recorded as living in Westmeath at April 2011 had arrived in Ireland in the previous twelve months, while 299 had arrived in Roscommon during the year.
