National award successes for Athlone Musical Society

It was a sensational weekend for Athlone Musical Society at the annual Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) awards.

The local musical society's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat was honoured with four awards during a virtual awards ceremony held online on Saturday night.

Athlone took the coveted best overall show prize in the Sullivan Section, the second of two categories in the awards.

It also took the top prize for best director, which was won by Alfie Kilduff, for best musical director, Ger Madden and best choreographer, Lea Carroll.

In a post on its Facebook page, the society said: "Thank you to everyone who made Joseph so special.”

Mayor of Athlone/Moate Municipal District, Cllr Aengus O'Rourke said: "I would like to sincerely congratulate Athlone Musical Society for coming away with four awards at the coveted Association of Irish Musical Societies Annual Awards.

"Joseph was a brilliant show, and was deservedly recognised at the weekend.  Congratulations to all involved.  It is great to have  some good news to celebrate at this challenging time, particularly for all those involved in the Arts."
