'Tourism boost' as new moorings installed along Shannon in Athlone

A local councillor has this week welcomed the provision of ten new moorings between the new Athlone Boat Club development and the white railway bridge in the town.

Cllr Jamie Moran said the investment in new moorings along the western bank of the Shannon would be a "massive boost" for tourists coming to the town.

"We all know how busy the Athlone Marina is at present, and this will give more room for more boats for the town," he said.

He explained this development was one his father, the former Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, had worked on with Waterways Ireland and Westmeath County Council.

"Now with the new Athlone Boat Club, with this new development taking place, and with the new Greenway going across the Shannon it will bring a great focus on the town of Athlone.

"My sincere thanks to everyone involved," said Cllr Moran.
