After years of planning, Athlone's new pedestrian and cycleway bridge is now open.

It's the fourth bridge over the Shannon in the town, and is seen as a significant landmark on the planned national cycleway between Dublin and Galway.

Here are some scenes from the official opening this morning, Tuesday, August 8, which saw the ribbon being cut by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jack Chambers:
