Liam McHale appointed as new Athlone GAA manager

Former Mayo star Liam McHale has been announced today (Tuesday) as the new manager of Athlone GAA Club's senior football team.

In a statement issued by PRO Trevor Nicholson, the club said it was delighted to announce the appointment of the Ballina man as its new senior men's team manager.

"Liam brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as a coach and selector with several teams, including the Mayo and Roscommon senior teams," said the statement.

"We’d like to welcome Liam to the club and we look forward to working with him in 2020 and beyond."

McHale previously worked as part of Kevin McStay's management team which led St Brigid's of Kiltoom to All Ireland senior glory in 2013.

The 54-year-old's coaching involvement also included working alongside McStay as part of the Roscommon management set-up.

During his playing career with Mayo he started four All Ireland finals, in 1989, 1996 (including a replay in which he was sent off against Meath) and 1997.

He will be hoping to bring about an improvement in Athlone's fortunes after a disappointing 2019 in which the club lost all of its group matches in the Westmeath senior football championship.
