Dolan and Ennis rated doubtful for Wicklow clash

Dessie Dolan and Michael Ennis are Westmeath"s two main injury concerns ahead of the Leinster quarter-final with Wicklow on Sunday week, June 14. Westmeath played Wexford on Monday last in their final warm-up match before the showdown with Mick O"Dwyer"s charges. Neither Dolan or Ennis played any part in the game as two goals in the closing stages saw Wexford claim a 2-16 to 0-16 victory at Silverpark in Dublin. Wexford had led by three points at half-time and both sides made several changes as the game wore on. Dolan is suffering from a knee injury picked up in the challenge match against Cavan a few weeks ago, and he missed Garrycastle"s SFC clash with Maryland on Monday of last week. Ennis is carrying an Achilles tendon injury and is also rated doubtful for the Wicklow match, which will be played at O"Connor Park, Tullamore. On a brighter note, last Monday saw Martin Flanagan play his first match for Westmeath this season. The Tyrrellspass man, who played for his club against St Malachy"s in the SFC recently, completed the entire 70 minutes against Jason Ryan"s side. Another positive was the encouraging display of substitute Fergal Wilson, while Athlone"s Alan Gaughan also saw action from the bench. Teenage forward Thomas McDaniel was not involved as he is starting his Leaving Cert exams this week. However, the Ballinagore player will be available for the Wicklow match. Neither David O"Shaughnessy or the recently returned Damien Healy played in the Wexford game and while they look unlikely to start against Wicklow, they could be among the subs. Athlone"s Paul Bannon did not play against Wexford due to flu, while his brother Dermot missed out because of an injury which is not thought to be serious. Meanwhile, Castledaly"s Paul Kelly recently decided to leave the county panel. By most accounts, Westmeath did not play as well last Monday as they had in their previous challenge match outing against Mayo, and there are a still a number of areas which will cause Tomás Ó Flatharta and co. concern. Westmeath team v Wexford: Gary Connaughton; Francis Boyle, Kieran Gavin, John Keane; Donal O"Donoghue, Derek Heavin, Willie Murtagh; David Duffy, Martin Flanagan; Keith Scally, John Smyth, Doran Harte; John Connellan, Denis Glennon, Conor Lynam. Among the subs used were: Fergal Wilson, Alan Gaughan, Alan Claffey, David Kilmartin, Paul Sharry.
